Even people far from the culture of the bar, have heard about this legendary drink at least once in a lifetime. He is in the cocktail card of respectable establishments on all continents, in his honor they write songs and compose verses. Pina Colada is a low-alcoholic Caribbean cocktail consisting of rum, coconut milk and pineapple juice. It is characterized by a mild balanced taste and speed of cooking. From the Spanish language “Pina colada” literally translates as “filtered pineapple juice.”
According to the most popular version, the classic recipe for Pina Colada was invented in 1954 by barman Ramon Marrero. He worked in the Caribbean islands in the Beachcomber bar. After three months of experiments with mixing different ingredients, he got a cocktail, the taste of which was very popular with visitors. Several years later, the recipe of Pina Colada arrived in the US and then to Europe.
According to another version Pina Colada first appeared in the restaurant “Barracina” in Puerto Rico. His creation was sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture of the island. The recipe was developed by specially hired scientists. To consolidate the right to the authorship of the drink in 1978, the government made the Pina Colada cocktail national pride of Puerto Rico and installed a plaque.
Some historians claim that the prototype of Pina Colada appeared in 1820. To maintain morale, the captain of Caribbean pirates Roberto Cofresi gave his team members a drink consisting of rum, pineapple juice and coconut milk. Modern authors just picked the right proportions.
Since 1961 Pina Colada is on the official list of the IBA (International Bar Association). It is believed that every self-respecting barman should be able to prepare from the memory of this cocktail.

Composition and proportions:
Coconut milk can be replaced with coconut drink Malibu. Juice is better to use fresh. Extracted from the concentrate slightly spoils the taste. Cream in the composition is not mandatory. If a fat content of more than 15%, then they can coagulate in sour citrus juice.
It is believed that you need a Cuban or Puerto Rican rum for a cocktail. In fact, any quality rum is suitable regardless of the country of production.
Attention! To make a non-alcoholic cocktail of Pina Colada, it is sufficient to exclude rum from the rum, and replace the Malibu liqueur with coconut milk or syrup. Technology of preparation and taste of the drink will not change.
Recipe for home Pina Colada
- All ingredients (except cherry and a slice of pineapple) whisk in a blender until smooth.
- Pour the resulting mixture into a tall glass.
- Decorate the cocktail with cherries, a slice of pineapple or whipped cream.
- Serve with a tube.
